How to Split Your iTunes Library Across Different Locations

Following are steps to Split iTunes Library Across Multiple Locations

  • Open up your iTunes library. Usually people have a lot of files in the music and videos section. We are going to split these. Instead of having both these heavy folders at the same location, we will have one at the same location as before and split the other (videos) to the external hard disk.
  • Before we begin to split your iTunes library, it would be better to backup all the data. In fact, better do it because Apple only allows single download for most files from iTunes library which means most of what you got or bought cannot be had again!
  • Create a folder on the external hard disk. You can name it as anything like iTunes-Video or some other similar, immediately recognizable name so that sorting or segregating is easy. We are going to get all the data on the iTunes video folder to this place.
  • Now, keeping open both the iTunes and the folder on the external disk, drag the video folder (in the iTunes) to the new folder. On a Mac, this actually means you are copying the files to the new folder on the external hard disk. Depending on the size of your disk, it might take a lot of time for the transfer to be complete.
  • Once you are done with it, go to the iTunes, select the folder on the panes window. Now you get a list of all the files (albums) on the folder. Select all of them and delete them (send them to Trash).
  • After you are done with it, all you need to do is drag the new folder into the iTunes library again – but hold the Options key while you do that. (Options and Alt on the same key). When you do this, iTunes only creates a link to the folder (and not copy the folder). This way your space is saved and you still have a rocking iTunes!
